Hieroglyphic Trail is a 2.8 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Apache Junction, Arizona that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. At the end of this trail are petroglyphs and, in early spring, small waterfalls.

I've been promising Zachary a hike for weeks now, but what with the moving and the unpacking and the trip East for Michael's 40th high school reunion, it wasn't until today that we managed it; and even then, we got a late start. But that turned out to be a good thing; our hike wound up including a spectacular sunset along with the rise of a full moon.

Last year, we hiked Piestewa Peak on New Year's Day, and it really gave a beautiful and healthy start to the year. So nothing was going to stop me from starting 2010 the same way. Although Mary was unable to join us as she had in 2009, we were joined by Zach's friend Josh. And so, with Michael completing our little group, we set out at about 2:30 pm to make the 30 minute drive to the trailhead that leads to Hieroglyphic Canyon.

Revisiting a spot 15 years later.

It was too pretty a day to stay inside, so I decided to revisit the trailhead, at least, of the hike to Hieroglyphic Trail. My back wasn't doing well enough for me to hike more than a few dozen yards in, but between the views along the way to and through Gold Canyon, and the shots I was able to take from just beyond the trailhead itself, I think I got enough of a taste of the place to encourage me to return as soon as I can hike a little farther.
