Given today's dystopian political environment, I can hardly be blamed for looking back to a simpler time when America actually was, not only pretty great, but beloved across the world. (Well, except for the Germany and Japan.) In terms of technique and content, this album's a bit of a departure. Instead of digging up old lyrics of mine and dressing them in new arrangements, I invented an alternate Earth—one where I was alive in 1944, leading a big band on a USO tour instead of showing up decades later as a Boomer with a laptop. These are the songs that bandleader would have written: wartime letters home, camp humor, homesick jokes about C-rations and stateside sweethearts, and the stubborn hope that got everybody through it.

It's also a bit of an experiment in voice—writing as someone who lived through it, rather than someone looking back on it—and in production, leaning on Suno to get the period big-band sound right. All lyrics are mine (I admit to occasional rhyming help), and the arrangements are based on my melodies.

"Wee Willie Winkie" is a patter song, a form the USO circuits leaned on hard—fast, tongue-twisting, syllable-packed numbers built to land a laugh a line and give a band a chance to show off. I took the old nursery-rhyme constable who runs through town in his nightgown checking that children are in bed, and put him to work instead as the world's least effective camp sergeant, forever chasing lights-out violations he can never quite catch in time. The tune moves fast enough that whoever sings it earns her pay.

By 1943, Glenn Miller's outfit had turned wartime monogamy into a smash, with a song about a girl warning her fella to be faithful until his return (Andrews Sisters), and the fella making the same warning to his girl. It made every couple on the dance floor slow down and get sentimental, which we figured was only half the deal. This was our response. The words and tune are original, even if the sentiment is not.

Strictly speaking, this one gets ahead of the news. In 1944 nobody stateside was hopping a boat to Japan and back for a weekend, but we wrote it anyway, imagining the day some hometown mother makes the trip herself, sees the peace settled with her own eyes, and comes home to report on it personally—less a piece of reporting than a piece of wishful thinking set to a beat, the same kind of hope that runs through half this album.

This is our answer to Tommy Dorsey's "Will You Still Be Mine?"—same yearning question, aimed back at him. It's also a bit of a trick song, and a structural gimmick that wasn't common for the period. The first time through, the words are built to last: seasons turning, letters slowing, nothing you couldn't still sing a decade later without anybody blinking. Then the band takes it around again, same tune, half a step higher, and the words come back completely different— suddenly crammed with the actual moment: Sinatra on the radio, ration books, War Bond ads, election promises. A song about being remembered forever, immediately dated on purpose, twice in the same three minutes.

Obviously, this one's my answer to "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition"—same wartime instinct to fold a prayer and a supply request into one line, just aimed a little higher and asking a little more nicely. While Richard Perkins sings the solo parts, this is very much the full ensemble, every voice we had, which felt right for a number that's less one person's story than the whole outfit saying the same thing at once.

Three fellas, three coastlines, three girls they'd each swear was the reason the war had to end. Every man in the band had somebody he was writing to, so instead of picking one story we let three of them share the same tune, trading verses the way they probably traded snapshots on a long train ride—Maine, Florida, Virginia, and the same porch light burning in all three places.

The verses here are Oliver Goldsmith's "An Elegy on the Death of a Mad Dog" (1766), a mock-elegy he tucked into The Vicar of Wakefield and had one of its characters recite with a perfectly straight face—right up to its famously backwards last line. I added a chorus of my own between the stanzas and set the whole thing to music for this album.

Every verse here is from a letter home from a recruit who's clearly never left his county before, earnestly floored by things the rest of the outfit stopped noticing on day two: running water, a shower schedule, a mattress that isn't stuffed with straw from the barn. It's a small joke played straight—eight verses of a kid convinced the Army has invented luxury, right up to the closer, where he allows, almost as an afterthought, that so far war isn't Hell.

A rumba, of all things—the one number on the album that doesn't sound like it belongs in a USO tent at all, and that's the joke. Every South Pacific postcard cliche gets its due: moonlight, trade winds, island maidens, the whole travelogue. And every verse turns it down flat for a porch, a neighbor, a mailman who's always late. Paradise gets the better tune. Home gets the last word.

The words here are Charles Edward Carryl's "The Camel's Complaint" (1885), a nonsense poem in which a thoroughly put-upon camel runs down every other animal's cushy arrangements—canaries with their sugar, poodles with their noodles, cats dozing in chairs—before landing on the joke: he can make do with anything, anywhere, any shape at all. It scans so naturally to a tune that I couldn't resist setting it, unchanged, to music for this album.

This is the album's closer, and it's built to be one: full company, every voice we had, the biggest arrangement on the record. After two choruses of straightforward hometown-and-flag pride, the encore verse widens the lens on purpose—"black and white and yellow and red," arms open to the whole world instead of just the one street the rest of the album keeps circling back to. It felt like the right note to end on.

The melody here was written to carry my mother's own lyrics—you can read the original, sung version, over in "Whippoorwill" on Music Only Dogs Can Hear. For this album, the tune goes to work as a straight dance number: no lyrics, just the band, arranged for the floor. Dance cards on a USO tour ran short on women more nights than not, so the number doubles as a nod to a very real wartime solution—every fella grabs whoever's closest and dances anyway. The guys didn't much care who was leading (usually the taller). This is that song, arranged for the 1944 big band. Every guy, grab a guy and dance!
