One tune, sixteen times. This album takes Whippoorwill—the song from Music Only Dogs Can Hear—and walks it forward through three hundred years of popular music, from a baroque court in the 1700s to a pop diva in the 2020s.

The conceit is that nobody here is copying the original. Each performer has only heard the version immediately before their own. The baroque composer is working from an actual bird outside an actual window; everybody after him is working from hearsay. A minstrel show learns it from a concert hall. A saloon piano learns it from the minstrel show. A Liverpool teenager learns it from a crooner's record and plugs it into an amplifier, and two years after that it turns up with a fuzz box and a grievance.

What interests me is how much survives that. The melody gets syncopated, smoothed, scored for brass, stripped to three chords, stacked into harmonies and finally ornamented past recognition—and it is still, unmistakably, the same two notes a bird was repeating in the dark while somebody was trying to get to sleep.

This one really does want to be heard in order.
