This song has a backstory for sure. When I was about 19, the summer after I graduated from high school, I was working as a lifeguard at the Ponce de Leon Motor Lodge in St. Augustine. There was almost no one ever actually there; so, to fight boredom, I wrote what we now call "fan fiction", a script for Love, American Style entitled "Love and the Girl Reporter". And I decided it needed a song. So I wrote this, with the idea that Lois would sing it about her impossible love for Superman.

Nothing happened with my fan fiction, but I kept the song. You can read the rest of the story, and hear it sounding like Frankie Valli (sort of), with a New Jersey beat, on That '70s Album. On 1943 it became a big-band dance number with a swing xylophone. This is the concert arrangement.
