Every keyboard shortcut Desktop Minder answers, grouped by where it works: everywhere, folder listings, launcher panes, text, pictures, audio and video, mail, calendar and contacts, and web pages.
Estimated reading time: 7 minute(s) (1519 words)

Desktop Minder is mostly a mouse program, but the keys it does answer are listed here, grouped by where they work. A key that works in an editor works only while that editor has the focus, so Ctrl+Z in a picture doesn't reach into a text box on another desktop. Where a key is missing from a group, it isn't an oversight on this page: the program doesn't answer it yet, and the right-click menu is the way.

Everywhere

KeysWhat they do
F1Opens the help page for what you were last working in (a View, a launcher, the Wikipedia panel), in the View
Ctrl+,Opens the settings of the desktop you are on (the Settings page tells how to reach the program's own)
EscWhen the window is maximized or full screen, brings it back to a size you can see round, so you can get at the rest of Windows. Not when Desktop Minder is your Windows shell, where there is nowhere to go back to, and not when the window is already normal, so Esc stays free for whatever has the focus
EscWhile a slow job has the window held still with the wait cursor (Compress and Uncompress do), asks it to stop
F5Loads again the web page or HTML page on show. In a folder or a launcher it reads the folder again; see below
Ctrl+VPastes what is on the clipboard into the document in the View (files, text or a picture), unless the focus is in a text box or a web page, which keep Ctrl+V for themselves
Enter, EscWhile you are typing a name or a cell (a desktop's tab, a tile, a row, a tag in a column): keep it, or drop it
Ctrl held while choosingCompress or Uncompress keeps the original this once instead of recycling it

F1 and Ctrl+, are caught at the window, so they work wherever the focus is.

Folder Listing

Click a row first so the listing has the keyboard.

KeysWhat they do
DeleteDeletes the selected rows, as the trash can on the bar does (it asks first where there is no Recycle Bin)
F5Reads the folder again
Ctrl+ASelects every row
F2Opens the selected row's name for typing, as Rename does
Ctrl+VPastes into the folder, as Paste on the menu does; after a Cut it moves
Up, Down, Home, End, a letterMove the selection, as in any Windows list
Enter, EscKeep or drop the name, or the cell, you are typing

Delete, F5, Ctrl+A and F2 leave the key to the text box while a name or a cell is being typed. Ctrl+C and Ctrl+X aren't answered; use the right-click menu. The Folders page says more.

With the Mouse

These keys change what a drag or a double-click means:

HeldWhat it does
NothingA drag moves (a program dragged into a pane makes a shortcut to it)
CtrlThe drag copies
ShiftThe drag moves
Ctrl+ShiftThe drag makes a shortcut beside the original
Shift and double-click a folderOpens it and puts it on the launcher strip as well
Ctrl while dragging a band across tilesKeeps what was selected and adds to it

Launcher Panes

KeysWhat they do
DeleteDeletes the selection (left alone while a name is being typed, and where nothing can be changed)
F5Reads the folder again
Right, LeftIn a Tree, opens or shuts the selected folder
Enter, EscKeep or drop the name you are typing on a tile
Ctrl+V, Shift+InsertIn the Notes panel, puts the clipboard down as a new note (not while a name is being typed)

See Launchers. In the Icon Gallery, F2 renames the picked icon, and Enter or Esc ends the name.

In the Styles pull-out, Enter in the font box applies the font you typed, and in the theme box it does what the button beside it says. The Text page has these in its own table.

Pictures

These work on the Change tab, while the picture itself has the focus (click it first).

KeysWhat they do
Ctrl+ZUndo
Ctrl+Y, Ctrl+Shift+ZRedo
Ctrl+ASelects the whole picture
Ctrl+DSelects nothing
EscLets go of the selection, if there is one; otherwise it is left to the window

Ctrl+1Actual size
[, ]Smaller and larger brush
Arrow keysScroll the picture around
Space held, and dragPans the picture (so does the middle button)
Shift or Alt held while selectingAdds to the selection, or takes away from it

With a Crop to a Ratio or Size frame up, Enter crops, Esc lets the frame go, and the arrow keys move the frame a pixel at a time (ten with Shift) instead of scrolling the picture. While the frame is up, Delete and Ctrl+C aren't answered, rather than clear or copy pixels you can't see. The mouse wheel zooms around the pointer. See Pictures.

Audio and Video

SpaceIn Roll, play

Mail

A mailbox is a folder, so on its messages the folder keys work: F5, Ctrl+A and Delete, and F2 and Ctrl+V as they do in any listing. In the message you are writing, Delete takes the attached file you have selected off the list. Reply, Reply All and Forward are on the message bar and have no keyboard shortcut. See Email.

Calendar and Contacts

KeysWhat they do
Left, RightIn the calendar, the day before or after
Up, DownThe same day the week before or after
Page Up, Page DownThe month before or after
HomeToday
EnterIn the contact book's search box, searches without waiting for you to stop typing
EscIn that search box, puts the search away

The mouse wheel steps the month. A contact book is a folder, so the folder keys work on its cards. See Contacts and Calendar.

Web Pages

KeysWhat they do
F5Refresh the page, even with the focus inside it
EnterIn the Wikipedia panel, looks up the topic you typed

The browser's own shortcuts are switched off in the View, so Back and Ahead are the arrows on the bar. See Web Sites.

When a Key Does Nothing

The most common reason is the focus. A listing, a pane, a picture and a timeline each answer keys only when they have the focus, so click on them first. The second is that a text box has it: while you type a name or a cell, Delete, F5, Ctrl+A and Ctrl+V belong to the text. And a few keys, such as Ctrl+C in a folder, simply aren't answered yet.
